Exploiting Ad-hoc Networks over Smart Handheld Devices for Disaster Rescue

    Abstract

    This paper proposes a platform for accurate and on-time disaster rescue by exploiting a wireless ad-hoc network over smart devices. Specifically, we develop an application-layer ad-hoc network over hand-held smart devices without relying on cellular carrier networks, or wireless access points. The proposed platform also includes a localization method which is specifically customized to disaster rescue objectives with considering disaster-specific constraints. We also present both simulation and implementation results to evaluate the proposed method compared to other studies.
